Tips from travelers

Admin verified

Kutaisi Airport (KUT) has cheap flights but limited transport

Wizz Air and others fly cheaply into KUT, but the airport is 25 km from the city and bus connections are sparse late at night. Pre-book a transfer or use Bolt โ€” don't assume taxis will be waiting at 02:00.

Admin verified

Kutaisi is a base for nature, not a city stay

Most travelers use Kutaisi for 1โ€“2 nights to reach Prometheus Cave, Okatse Canyon, and Martvili. The city center itself is small โ€” plan day trips rather than a long city stay.

Admin verified

Sighnaghi is a half-day, not a full day

The walled town itself is small (2โ€“3 hours). Combine with Bodbe Monastery and a winery in Tsinandali or Telavi for a satisfying day from Tbilisi.

Admin verified

Wine-tasting needs a designated driver

Even small Kakheti family wineries pour generously and police enforce zero-tolerance DUI. Hire a driver-guide or take an organized tour from Tbilisi rather than self-driving back the same day.

Admin verified

Bring a warm layer โ€” even in summer

Kazbegi sits at 1,700m. Summer days can hit 25ยฐC in the valley but drop to 8โ€“10ยฐC at the church viewpoint with strong wind. Pack a fleece and rain shell even in July/August.

Admin verified

Hire a private driver, not a shared marshrutka

The Tbilisi โ†’ Kazbegi road is winding and the marshrutka stops only briefly at Ananuri and Gudauri. A private driver (250โ€“400 GEL/day) lets you stop for photos, lunch in Pasanauri, and reach Gergeti Trinity Church without rushing.

Casinos accept ILS and USD โ€” but tip in GEL

Most large Batumi hotels and casinos accept several currencies, but small cafรฉs, taxis, and the bazaar expect Georgian lari. Withdraw GEL from a Bank of Georgia or TBC ATM, not currency-exchange kiosks on the boulevard.

Admin verified

Batumi is a city resort, not a quiet beach

The beach is pebble (not sand) and the boulevard is lively at night. Families wanting calm should look at Gonio or Kvariati, 15โ€“20 minutes south.

Admin verified

Taxi apps that actually work in Tbilisi

Bolt is the most reliable for tourists. Yandex Go is cheaper but the app is in Russian. Avoid hailing from the street unless the driver agrees to a metered fare first.

Admin verified

Where to base yourself in Tbilisi

Vera and Sololaki are walkable, leafy, and close to Old Tbilisi without the late-night noise of Aghmashenebeli. Avoid Didube area for hotels โ€” it's a transit hub, not a stay zone.

Save 112 before you land

Georgia's single emergency number is 112 (police, ambulance, fire). Operators speak Georgian, Russian, and English. Save it in your phone before arrival. For consular emergencies, contact the Israeli Embassy in Tbilisi separately.

Bring both card and some cash

Cards work in most Tbilisi/Batumi restaurants, hotels, and supermarkets. Small bakeries, marshrutkas, village markets, and some taxis prefer cash (GEL). Withdraw at bank ATMs (TBC, Bank of Georgia) rather than street ATMs for better rates.

Kazbegi: hire a driver, don't self-drive in winter

The Georgian Military Road to Stepantsminda climbs to ~2,400m at the Jvari Pass. Snow, fog, and lorry convoys are normal Oct-Apr. Most Israeli families book a private driver from Tbilisi for the day rather than self-driving. Check road status the morning of the trip.

Families: private drivers beat group tours

For day trips to Kazbegi, Kakheti, or Borjomi with kids, a private driver is usually cheaper than two adult group-tour seats once you're three travelers, and lets you stop on your schedule. Look for a Hebrew or English speaker who knows the route.

Common first-day mistakes

Avoid changing money at the airport (poor rate), don't pay taxis in USD/EUR, and don't assume everyone speaks English outside tourist zones โ€” keep the Georgian phrases card handy.

Admin verified

Cards work in cities, cash in villages

Visa/Mastercard works in most Tbilisi and Batumi restaurants and shops. Outside cities (Kazbegi, Kakheti villages, mountain bakeries) bring small-denomination GEL cash.

Admin verified

Buy a local eSIM before landing

Magti and Geocell coverage is strong in Tbilisi/Batumi but weaker in mountains. An Israeli-friendly eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) avoids airport SIM queues and works the moment you land.

Admin verified

Taxi from Tbilisi airport โ€” use the app, not curb hagglers

TBS taxi drivers waiting outside Arrivals routinely overcharge tourists. Order Bolt or Yandex Go from inside the terminal; ride to central Tbilisi is typically 25โ€“40 GEL.
